How is Dyson Pushing the Engineering limits?

Dyson is known not only for the designing of its products but also for ground-breaking engineering used to make the products. One of the reasons of Dyson’s success is its rigorous testing and prototyping process. For instance, the very first Dyson product i.e., the bagless vacuum cleaner, took over 5,000 prototypes to finalise. The company employs around 5000 engineers dedicated to the manufacturing of these exceptional innovations. This commitment to perfection and innovation can be clearly seen in Dyson’s impressive product portfolio. For example- Dyson Airblade tap, an extraordinary advancement that washes and dries your hands in the same sink in just 12 seconds. Dyson’s range includes various remarkable products like- vacuum cleaners, hair dryers, and other cutting-edge products. While the company’s first product, the bagless vacuum cleaner, was initially in doubt but later on the company found investors for the same and it was a big success then.

However, not every innovation at Dyson was a success. For instance, the CR01 washing machine, it had dual contra-rotating drums for superior washing performance. The company had a completely different approach but the production cost was too high so, eventually the machine was discontinued. This journey highlights Dyson’s relentless pursuit of technological innovation, navigating both triumphs and setbacks in the process to redefine everyday appliances. All well- executed Dyson products are known for its successful regulation of air flow.

Let’s have a look at the outstanding engineering process of one of the most successful products by Dyson- the Dyson Airwrap, a perfect example of the company’s commitment to innovation and design. It comes with various components including a specialized dryer, two barrels, two smoothing brushes, and one volumizing brush. This tool has been a success because of its ability to revolutionize styling.

Designing

The Dyson Airwrap is designed to give its customers a professional experience at the comfort of their homes. This tool offers everything needed for drying, straightening, and blow-drying hair, while also adding volume. The ergonomics of the design have been completely taken care of by making it easier for people to use without creating any sorts of mess. Dyson’s Product Design and development process is not only limited to the design of the product but also to the packaging of the product. It is designed considering the human tendencies, housed in a soft, cushioned case that not only protects against dents but also neatly organizes all the attachments and charging cables, indicating the brand’s commitment to user experience.

How does this revolutionary product works?

This product harnesses the power of Coanda effect and uses the natural airflow to style and dry hair. Unlike other conventional hair tools, this technology attracts hair to the barrel and wraps it securely to the barrel, creating curls or straight styles effortlessly. This concept does not even let the hair come into direct contact with the heating surface, instead it uses the heat from the air and the barrel is solely to give the shape to hair. With six slots on the barrel releasing air, it maintains control of air and precision during styling. Its standout feature is intelligent heat control sensors that ensure air temperature remains below 150 degrees Celsius, designed with complete human-centric approach. It helps to ensure that there is no heat damage to the hair. Dyson Airwrap has garnered positive feedback despite its premium pricing because of its main feature of minimal hair damage.

While investing in Dyson products may seem costly, their unmatched quality and meticulous R&D justify the expense. It is like ‘more in, more out’ in case of Dyson, i.e., more invested in Research and development, the greater the product innovation. The company uses Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) prototyping, that allows the company to have a better idea of the of design aesthetics and the functionality of the product

We believe that there is demand for more products that are designed with exceptional ergonomics and a better human-centric approach. A strong foundation, starting with meticulous prototyping is essential to get such products.
